1.5 kg chuck steak, trimmed and cubedHearty-Beef-Casserole-Pic

1/4 cup plain flour

Salt and freshly ground pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 brown onions, peeled and cut into wedges

2 cloves garlic

4 carrots, peeled and cut into thick slices

1 cup red wine

700 gram jar passata

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1. Preheat Smeg Oven on Conventional Setting at 160°C.

2. Place beef cubes, flour, salt and pepper into a plastic bag. Seal the end and toss so that the beef is coated with the flour.

3. Heat oil in a flame and oven proof dish. Remove beef from bag and cook in 3 or 4 batches until browned. Remove each batch from pan before continuing with next batch.

4. Add onion and garlic to pan. Cook until onion has started to soften. Add carrots to pan and cook for a further 2 minutes.

5. Return beef to pan along with red wine, passata and tomato paste. Stir to combine all ingredients.

6. Place lid on casserole dish and cook on shelf position 2 for 2 1/2 hours or until meat is tender.

7. Serve with mashed potatoes or creamy polenta and steamed green vegetables.

Note: If you would like the gravy to be a little thicker, place the casserole dish back onto the cooktop and bring to the boil. Combine 2 teaspoons of cornflour with 1/4 cup cold water and then stir into the casserole until gravy thickens. Serve immediately.
